Discovering Leather Craft

About five years ago, amidst lockdown, I crossed paths with two amazing people: Lourens and Marinda Brandt from @capetownleathertraining.

We exchanged graphic design services for leather training in a barter deal. That’s where I was introduced to leather, a material that would soon become a significant part of my creative journey.

The touch and feel of it captivated me instantly. Leather is both supple and sturdy, inviting my hands to explore its surface. Working with leather was not just a task; it was an experience that filled me with purpose and satisfaction. Each piece I encountered was unique, boasting its own distinct markings and small details that told a story of its origin.

The subtle variations in colour, from rich browns to deep blacks, and the contrasting textures between the rough and smoother parts of the leather added to its allure. As I delved deeper into this craft, I began to create a variety of items that reflected my growing skills and artistic vision.

Crafting Unique Leather Goods

I made handbags that were not only functional but also stylish. I incorporated various designs and embellishments that showcased my personal touch. Smaller sling bags soon followed, designed for convenience and ease of use, perfect for those on-the-go moments.

I also crafted pencil cases that were both practical and aesthetically pleasing. They could hold all the essentials while looking chic. Tassels became another delightful project, allowing me to experiment with colour combinations and textures, adding a playful element to my creations.

Belts were another avenue for my creativity. I explored different widths and buckle styles, making each piece a statement accessory. Each project I undertook became more than just a simple task; they transformed into an outlet for my creative need. It was a way to express myself and share my passion with others through thoughtful gifts.

The joy of gifting these handmade items was immeasurable. I could see the delight in the recipients' eyes, knowing that I had poured my heart and soul into every stitch and detail.

A New Chapter in Australia

Then we immigrated. It was my first experience of Australia. The thrill of the unknown was exhilarating. My main focus was on settling my family and adjusting to our new normal. My husband, our 10-year-old son, and 5-year-old daughter were all excited about our new life in Australia. So, leather work was put on hold while we got settled.

Embracing New Opportunities

As we settled into our new home, I began to explore the local art scene. I found inspiration in the vibrant culture and stunning landscapes around me. I started to meet fellow artists and makers who shared my passion for unique, sustainable decor.

I realized that my love for leather could flourish here. I wanted to create pieces that not only reflected my artistic vision but also resonated with the Australian aesthetic. I began experimenting with local materials and techniques, blending them with my existing skills.

Building a Brand

With renewed energy, I decided to turn my passion into a business. I wanted to establish Kolie.Leather.Landscapes as a recognized name for unique, sustainable leather wall art. My goal was to grow my customer base by offering both ready-made and custom pieces.

I focused on creating distinctive home decor that would appeal to those looking for something special. Each piece I crafted was designed to tell a story, to evoke emotions, and to enhance the spaces they inhabited.

Connecting with the Community

I intend to visit markets and work with local custom furniture makers to explore how our products can enhance the decor market in Sydney.

I am seeking to connect with interior designers who would value the distinctive touch that leather can add to their projects. Collaborating with them will enable me to reach a broader audience and display my work in stunning spaces.

The Future of Leather Art

As I look to the future, I am excited about the possibilities. I want to continue exploring new designs and techniques. I aim to push the boundaries of what leather art can be.

My journey has been filled with challenges and triumphs. I’ve learned so much about myself and my craft. I am grateful for the support of my family and the community around me. Together, we can create a world where unique, sustainable decor is cherished and celebrated.

In summary, my exploration of leather art has profoundly changed me. Starting with crafting small pieces and now envisioning the creation of a brand that connects with fellow art collectors, I am excited about the future of this journey. I welcome you to accompany me on this adventure as we appreciate the beauty of leather and the narratives it can convey.
